    • New front-gate at Parris Island increases base security

PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. (WJCL)-Marines and visitors at Parris Island will soon enter the base through a new, state-of-the-art front security gate.

A handful of Marines, engineers and construction workers celebrated the opening of the base’s new front gate Tuesday afternoon with a ceremony and ribbon-cutting. The base’s commanding general, Brig. Gen. Terry V. Williams, was escorted through as the first official vehicle to pass through the new gate.

“The enhancement to security at your front gate where all of your civilians and military and commercial vehicles transition is a very vulnerable point so yes I would say it’s a great enhancement to the overall security,” said James Berroti, engineer director, Parris Island.

Head engineer Berotti says the new security check point is state-of-the-art, which is imperative with the recent threat of terrorism nationwide.

The $9.5 million security gate project began in July 2014. The project shifted the main security checkpoint for visitors from the old spot on Port Royal Island to Horse Island on the opposite side of the causeway.
